Johnsburg board approves grant application for mine reclamation; plans sand‑pit closure

The Town of Johnsburg voted Sept. 16 to pursue a New York State DEC Smart Growth grant to fund mine reclamation related to the sand pit at Skee Bowl/Skee Ball Park and to move forward with a planned pit closure.
Chair (speaker 1) read the resolution that notes the town intends to close the sand mine effective Dec. 1, 2025, and that DEC reclamation requirements must be completed within two years. The resolution states the regional planning board has agreed to write a grant for an amount "in the way that provides future development in line with the 2040 Master Park plan vision in the amount of $125,000 but not to exceed $300,000." The board moved, seconded and adopted the resolution.
Committee member (speaker 2) urged coordination on budgeting and grant details, noting the grant can be applied for up to $300,000 but the submitted application must reflect the specific budgeted need. "The grant can go up to 300,000, but you need to submit the budgeted amount that you need to do the project," the speaker said. Board members discussed that grant administration costs would be capped at 15% and that the town would put the work out to bid rather than using town equipment for reclamation.
Board members also corrected drafting language to reference the Lake Champlain Lake George Regional Planning Board and clarified the project’s alignment with the town’s comprehensive goals. The resolution passed by voice vote; staff will finalize the application and budget details and pursue grant coordination with the regional planning board.
