City Presents Three-Site Plan to Consolidate Public Works; Weston & Sampson Report Filed

Public Works Director Nate Guerette presented three conceptual site plans created by engineering firm Weston & Sampson that would consolidate most of the city’s Department of Public Works functions onto one of three parcels. The consolidation would retain the Messer St. garage as a cold-storage facility for smaller equipment while moving fleet, maintenance and materials storage to a new consolidated campus.
The plans include heated fleet storage maintained at roughly 50–55 degrees to allow plow trucks to remain loaded through freezes; drive-through maintenance bays sized for the ladder truck; a vehicle wash station; and a city fueling facility with aboveground tanks holding 10,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel to permit wholesale purchases. The designs add four football-field-sized storage areas for leaf, snow and road materials to replace several current off-site dumping locations.
Weston & Sampson’s package includes an existing-conditions assessment, space-needs analysis, fleet inventory and conceptual cost estimates; the full report will be on file in the City Clerk’s office alongside the meeting minutes. Councilors and staff discussed that the design leaves room for future expansion and possible relocation of additional city departments into the new space.
