The Washington County Commissioner’s Court approved a proclamation on Aug. 11 recognizing Aug. 11, 2026, as 811 safe digging day and urging contractors and homeowners to call the national 811 number before digging.
Judge (speaker 1) introduced the proclamation, noting that damage to underground infrastructure can cause service interruptions, environmental harm and threats to public safety. Andrew Boston (speaker 9) of the gas department thanked the court for the recognition and told the court, "If you don't call 811 before you dig, guess who you're gonna have to call next? 911." He and other speakers emphasized that calling 811 reduces risk and repair costs.
The court made a motion to adopt the proclamation, the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The proclamation cites the FCC’s 2005 designation of 811 as the national call-before-you-dig number and encourages county residents to use the service to protect underground utilities.
