Merkel council performs oaths of office; new mayor and four councilmembers sworn in

Ray Cobb was sworn in as mayor and Matthew Riggan, Tyler Newberry, Collin Jacobs and Alexis Smith took the oath of office at the Merkel City Council’s called meeting on May 12, 2026. Mayor Cobb called the meeting to order at 6:01 PM, a quorum was announced, Collin Jacobs led the prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge followed.
After the swearing-in, the council approved the Consent Agenda on a motion by Collin Jacobs, seconded by Matthew Riggan; the vote was recorded 5-0. The meeting proceeded to scheduled agenda items, including a public hearing on a Local Park Grant and several ordinance votes.
