Martha Webb, speaking for the senior committee, urged the board to consider increasing locally available senior exemptions in line with recent state guidance that allows a threshold up to $50,000 with sliding scales, noting that several neighboring towns have already acted.
"When that was changed in '23, 125 seniors benefited," Webb said, and she estimated the town‑level fiscal impact would be modest (she cited a rough impact of about 25¢ on the tax rate in her estimate) but would expand eligibility for more residents. Board members noted March 1 is the typical application cutoff for exemptions and suggested that Webb and staff coordinate to bring a formal proposal forward in time for eligibility this year.
The board asked staff to follow up and to schedule a discussion so the town could decide whether to opt into the higher exemption threshold for the coming tax year.
