Clinton board adopts Heat/AQI policy to protect outdoor workers

The Town Board of Clinton voted Aug. 11 to adopt a Heat/Air Quality Index policy to guide protections for outdoor employees, including highway workers and lifeguards, during extreme heat and poor air-quality events. Supervisor (S2) said the policy ties workplace actions to recognized indices: the U.S. Weather Service for heat and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for AQI values.
Supervisor (S2) described the policy as a formal codification of practices staff already use and said the town attorney provided no substantive objections. “It just puts it in writing,” the supervisor said during discussion. Board members agreed to add language in section 10 to allow the town supervisor, highway superintendent or recreation director — or their designee — to make operational decisions when triggers are met. The amended motion carried on a voice vote.
