Oconto County says dark‑fiber expansion with Bug Tussel will reach four sites this summer

County Administrator Richard Heath and Technology Services Director Melissa Schwaller updated the Property & Technology Committee on April 15 about an April 14 meeting with Bug Tussel to expand dark fiber to select county sites.
Heath and Schwaller said dark fiber is planned "to the Suring Highway Dept, New Niew Industries, Land Conservation and Village of Lena this summer," but the work is contingent on permitting and locating private utilities. Schwaller added Village of Suring and the City of Gillett were on the list but "currently too expensive" to include at this time.
Corporation Counsel Beth Ellingson recommended adding a recurring "Bug Tussel Project Update" to future Property & Technology agendas until the project is complete so the county can monitor permits, costs and construction progress. Committee members asked staff to return with status updates and any required contract or right‑of‑way approvals before construction begins.
The exchange did not include cost figures or firm construction dates; Heath and Schwaller said those details are pending permits and utility locates. The committee took the update as information and did not take formal action at the April 15 meeting.
