Otsego council amends start date for Costco’s off-sale liquor license

The Otsego City Council voted unanimously Aug. 3 to amend an off-sale intoxicating liquor license for Costco Wholesale Corporation (dba Costco Wholesale #1743) at 11910 60th Street NE.
Councilmember Corey Tanner moved to amend the license so the license period would start Aug. 4, 2026, and end June 30, 2027, with retail sales to begin Aug. 14, 2026; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Michelle Lund and carried 5-0. The approval is pending review and approval by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement.
The action follows the staff report, which the council said it agreed with during the brief meeting. City Clerk Audra Etzel recorded the council’s action and the vote tally. The amended dates set the formal municipal approval timeline but do not replace the required state-level authorization for retail alcohol sales.
The council’s approval allows Costco to proceed with local licensing steps; whether retail sales may begin on Aug. 14 depends on the state agency’s final approval. If the state regulator denies or delays that approval, the local amendment would not authorize retail sales. The council did not debate other conditions or amendments during the meeting.
