Needham residents split over Pollard plan as SBC hears support and warnings on cost

Public comment during the Aug. 10 School Building Committee session produced a wide range of views on the proposed Pollard Middle School design and financing. Supporters praised the program-driven layout, while others warned of long-term fiscal consequences and urged additional review before final MSBA submission.

Jessica Tollman, a 25-year Needham resident, said she appreciated that the design provides appropriate-sized special-education, science and world-language spaces and argued the schematic is what voters will consider in November. "I'm delighted that our students will finally be able to learn in spaces that are the right size," she said. Similarly, Stephanie Forman and Caitlin Smire spoke in favor, with Smire noting that some lower-cost alternatives could have taken up to 10 years and would have prolonged disruption to students.

By contrast, resident Ken Buckley urged restraint, saying the town appears headed toward a 33-year debt cycle that could place pressure on operating budgets and other capital projects. "This financing is going to lead us into a 33 year debt cycle, which is 13 years longer than typical policy would allow," he said, adding that voters and town boards had argued for less costly options. Barbara McDonald read a submitted letter requesting the select board direct a public reconciliation of the superintendent's July 28 memo with the MSBA schematic-design review and controlling drawings and called for pausing final MSBA submission until funding and scope are re-assessed.

Committee members and staff acknowledged the range of views and said the team is preparing simplified one-pagers, FAQs and public meetings (including an Aug. 26 session) to ensure residents can review the rationale for design choices, the MSBA eligibility calculations and the operating-cost projections ahead of town meeting and the ballot vote.
