Bertram council approves EDC FY 2026–27 budget; chair urges reserve caution

The Bertram City Council voted to approve the Economic Development Corporation FY 2026–27 budget on Aug. 11, moving it forward with attention to reserves and future land-opportunity needs. The chair said the city should avoid "nickel and diming" the EDC budget so it would retain capacity for a large land purchase or business-attraction opportunity.
Council discussion included suggestions to reserve a line item (a common practice in other cities) for current and potential projects; one council member suggested placing $50,000 into a projects/reserve account and returning other planned expenditures to council approval as needed. Council member Betty Predmore moved to approve the proposed FY 2026–27 EDC budget; the motion was seconded and passed by the council.
The budget packet was made available to council members in advance and the public hearing on the EDC budget earlier in the meeting drew no public comment. Council members noted the EDC maintains a reserve line and recommended careful cash management to preserve flexibility for strategic purchases or investments.
