Commissioners, staff weigh workload and cross-training as office consolidation is considered
Summary
A public participant and some commissioners asked whether a three-person team can reliably handle the work previously done by four staff during peak periods; staff described cross-training, designated duties and contingency plans including temporary help and shared assistance from nearby offices.

A participant at the meeting asked a direct question about staffing: "my main concern is making sure that, 3 people doing the work of 4 people during your busiest time, if you'll be able to handle it, like, without expecting a lot of overtime or burnout." Staff and commissioners responded that cross-training, designated task ownership and temporary support (for example, the extension agent helping with mailings) would mitigate those risks.
Commissioners said they would continue budgeting for the vacant standalone position this year so the county could restore it if consolidation proved unworkable. Staff described how each deputy would have designated strengths (for example, GL entries and reconciliations) while all three would be cross-trained to provide coverage during absences, including a planned six-week maternity leave.
