Bridgewater water project nears commissioning as PFAS and iron/manganese filters finish installation

Town staff told the council the new water-treatment components for Bridgewater's system are nearing startup after months of construction and testing. Bill Young said the iron and manganese filters were in final preparations for commissioning and that the PFAS filtration manifolds and conduits were being finished, with some pieces still on order. "We're hopeful to be sending the full system to distribution by the week of the 24th," Young said.
Councilors asked technical questions about filter media, backwash handling and SCADA integration. Young said the site includes six vessels (three iron/manganese beds with green sand and an anthracite layer, two granulated activated carbon vessels for PFAS, and a final polishing filter) and that the team will use frac tanks and lined lagoons to manage backwash solids until they can be hauled away. He emphasized DEP water-quality testing, cybersecurity protections and staged SCADA integration before water is reintroduced to the distribution system.
The council discussed contingency interconnections with Middleborough and voted to pursue drafting a longer-term intermunicipal agreement; Young recommended longer-term redundancy where feasible. Members asked staff for a brief written one-pager summarizing the technical milestones and a follow-up on expected operating costs once the system has been stabilized.
