Commissioners proclaim October Domestic Violence Awareness Month after debate over wording

Representatives from Saving Grace asked the board to proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to use the proclamation to raise public awareness about services for survivors. "We come here every October… to ask that we declare October to be a domestic violence awareness month in Jefferson County," a Saving Grace representative said.

During discussion, one commissioner objected to language in the draft proclamation that referenced "systemic oppression and inequity," saying he did not believe that wording accurately describes the county. The commissioner suggested alternative phrasing to emphasize community action and prevention without the contested terms. Saving Grace and other commissioners responded that community partnerships and victim support require multiple players and that language changes should not undermine acknowledgement of barriers faced by some residents.

After brief edits and clarification about the role of community‑based organizations, Commissioner Taylor read the proclamation aloud. "Whereas domestic violence affects every person in Jefferson County whether as a victim or survivor or as a family member…" the reading states. The board moved, seconded and adopted the proclamation by voice vote; the action was carried and Saving Grace thanked the commissioners for their support.

The proclamation is symbolic but the presenters and commissioners emphasized the county will continue advocacy and look for ways to coordinate messages to state and federal partners about funding for victim services.
