Alice Police Chief says department won $124,600 camera grant, plans Axon system

The Alice Police Chief told the City Council on Aug. 11 that the department had applied for $146,000 in camera funding and was awarded $124,600 to buy new cameras.
"We had applied for a grant for a 146,000, for cameras...and we ended up with a 124,600," the Police Chief said, adding that another $39,000 grant application is pending and that "we're gonna get another grant for 250,000, a little over 250,000 within the next month." The chief said the department plans to purchase Axon-brand cameras and emphasized that access will be limited to the police department: "Only Alice PD has access to that and no 1 else."
The chief asked the council for an opportunity at a later date to demonstrate the cameras and explain the department's choice of system. He also said the department is pursuing a separate, smaller grant to buy protective boots for officers after a recent on‑the‑job dog attack. The chief described the incident: the dog, belonging to "mister Anzaldua," attacked him while he was on a traffic stop on Helen Street.
Council members listened and thanked the chief; there was no separate vote tied to the grant update during the meeting.
The report came during the presentations portion of the Aug. 11 meeting and followed by routine business on the council's agenda.
