District reports summer reading camp gains and credit/attendance recovery

April Ulmer presented the district's summer academic programs and recovery work, saying the elementary reading camp targeted required third-graders (students who did not pass SC Ready). Ulmer said only seven students were required to attend but the program served 74 total and that of those seven, 57% demonstrated growth on MAP measures after 12 days.
Ulmer also described secondary offerings: 137 students in grades 5'8 programming, and at York Comprehensive High School attendance recovery and credit recovery programs serving 171 students, with 207 attendance recoveries and 60 credits recovered. Ulmer credited community partners and staff for the programming and said the short-term interventions are part of an ongoing strategy that also uses intercession days in October and February to support students who need additional time.
