The planning commission voted Aug. 10 to approve a special-exception sign permit for L & S Electric at 5707 Schofield Avenue to allow refacing of an existing freestanding monument sign and the addition of a decorative element.
Staff explained the proposed sign will be 9 feet in height and sit in the existing location with an 8-foot setback; the zoning code requires a setback equal to the sign height, so a special exception was needed. "Because of the current code requires a setback equal to the height of the sign, a special exception is needed and staff recommends approval," staff stated. A commissioner moved to approve the special exception per staff recommendation and the motion carried by voice vote.
The approval includes standard conditions related to location and materials as noted in the staff report; the commission acknowledged a prior provision allowing a 10-foot minimum offset if the sign had been sited differently.
