Hammond Capital Improvement Board approves $722,500 for Sportsplex repairs, 179th Street resurfacing and sidewalk program

The Hammond Capital Improvement Board on June 15 approved three funding allocations totaling $722,500 for facility repairs and street and sidewalk work.
The board approved funding allocation #327 of $122,500 to install an inline grinder at the Sportsplex with Sawyer Plumbing. The Chair said the Sportsplex lift-station pumps “have routinely been experiencing failure as a result of things, other than waste and paper towel being flushed down the toilets,” and that an inline grinder should shred material and prevent future pump failures. Commissioner Meade moved the motion; Councilman Rakos seconded. The motion carried on a roll call vote, six in favor and no dissent.
The board approved allocation #328, a $300,000 cooperative agreement to resurface 179th Street between Klein Avenue and the Little Calumet River with the town of Highland and the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission. The Chair said Highland had notified Hammond of its intent to close the street because it could not fund an $800,000 resurfacing, and that a deal brokered by Mayor McDermott to resurface under Hammond’s contract saved the partners about $500,000. Commissioner Moore clarified the cost split, saying, “So each of us a $100,000 a piece,” and that Highland and the basin commission have sent invoices; Hammond has recorded the amounts as accounts receivable.
The board also approved allocation #329, $300,000 for the 2026 sidewalk replacement program with JJ Newell Concrete. Councilman Salinas moved the motion and Commissioner Muda seconded; the motion carried 6–0.
No members of the public addressed the board during the public expression period. The board set its next regular meeting for July 6 and adjourned.
