Resident urges Grand County to act on Red Dirt Hill safety after recent crashes

Marty Mara told the commissioners he and dozens of neighbors live near the County Road 54 entrance to US 40 at Red Dirt Hill and that the intersection is dangerous in winter conditions because of a steep (roughly 6%) grade and limited sight lines. "Given the 6% pitch and limited visibility of this intersection, a car stop there will sustain serious injuries or fatalities if a vehicle following them is going 70 miles an hour or more in winter conditions," Mara said.
Mara said he has tracked USDOT safety metrics and discussed the location with Road & Bridge and CDOT over multiple years without a substantive response, and that residents are now preparing a petition asking the county to pursue a speed-limit reduction between County Road 53 and 55 and other countermeasures. He requested a brief meeting with commissioners and county staff to discuss next steps. Commissioners thanked Mara and directed staff to follow up with him about scheduling further dialogue with Road & Bridge and CDOT.
