The Zoning Board of Appeals denied requests for variances tied to an after‑the‑fact two‑story front entry portico at 8 Paddington Circle.
Jonathan Belani, design consultant for the applicant, explained the portico was added after construction and that the project increased a nonconforming front‑yard condition. Belani said he had canvassed nearby properties and found a range of setbacks in the neighborhood but acknowledged the portico had been installed without a permit. "The portico that was on wasn't on any application, any drawings until they put it up 1 day," a village official noted during questioning of the project timeline.
Board members said the change appeared self‑created and out of keeping with neighborhood scale. Board member Marty Muir said: "This is the 2nd time we've had a builder come in and kind of build something and ask for forgiveness afterwards." Janie Regan and John Brown agreed the proposal was substantial and inconsistent with surrounding homes. The chair put the motion to deny; the board voted to withhold the requested variances.
Belani was told the applicants could reapply with a redesigned portico set closer to the house or submit a new application after addressing permit and design concerns.
