Superintendent: strong first day; classroom staffing about 98.75% with 11 teacher vacancies

"We started today with only 11 classroom vacancies, teacher vacancies, with a total and a total of 51 administrative and professional vacancies," Dr. White said. "That means that we are 98.75 staffed for our classroom teachers, and all of our students have plans in place to cover any classes that do have vacancies."
White highlighted Waseana Elementary as a success story, saying the school’s fifth-grade cohort had a 100% pass rate on the SOLs last year and that teacher retention there is high. She thanked principals and central office staff for organizing convocation and a back‑to‑school extravaganza that drew more than 1,000 students and families and about 50 community partners.
White emphasized that the first weeks of school require "a little fine tuning" as routines settle and said the district will continue to track staffing and transportation performance; she credited bus drivers and transportation staff for a generally timely start to the day despite some dismissal delays at larger elementary sites.
The presentation was informational; no board action was taken. The superintendent pointed to upcoming monitoring of enrollment (Sept. 30 first measure) and promised updates as data and staffing change.
