USDB reports eight summer camps, dozens attended; leadership notes ongoing hiring needs

Superintendent Patton and USDB presenters reviewed this summer’s Expanded Core Services (ECS) camps and reported participation and staffing needs ahead of the school year. Patton said ECS led eight camps across Utah during summer 2026, with hands-on learning designed to build independent living, orientation and mobility, STEM skills, adaptive recreation and assistive-technology use.
Patton gave camp-by-camp numbers: an orientation and mobility (O&M) camp June 8–12 had eight students registered and eight attended; a virtual Snap Circuits camp June 15–19 had 10 registered and nine attended; Capabilities Utah (June 23–26) had 21 registered with 15 overnight students attending; an Ogden cooking camp (July 8–10) had seven registered and five attended; assistive-technology and art camps had smaller attendance. Patton said these programs support independence, life skills and peer connections.
Patton also listed staffing openings the agency is seeking to fill before the school year: two paraeducator positions in campus classrooms, seven intermediary positions across LEAs statewide, and one outreach TVI position in the Jordan School District. "We are still hiring for two paraeducator positions... and then we are still hiring for one outreach TVI position," Patton said.
Why this matters: ECS camps provide experiential instruction and social opportunities for students who are blind, low vision, deaf or hard of hearing; staffing levels affect program delivery and residential support as the academic year begins.
Next steps: USDB will continue recruitment for listed vacancies and report back to the committee on staffing and program outcomes as needed.
