Grand County approves 5-year special use permit for Verizon tower on County Road 1

Community Development staff presented a request for a 65-foot monopole Verizon Wireless tower with a 45-by-45-foot fenced compound on County Road 1 (Trough Road). Hannah Mahorney (Community Development) said the tower will expand coverage to Blue Valley Acres and improve service along Highway 9 toward Silverthorne; planning commission recommended unanimous approval.
Mahorney acknowledged one resident’s radiation concern and said the applicant had responded that radiation would not be an issue. Commissioners discussed visibility, a proposed $25,000 bond to fund removal if the tower is abandoned, and whether the county should consider raising bond amounts in the future; staff noted the county has used the $25,000 figure for about 20 years.
After conditions and clarifications, a commissioner moved to approve the Verizon Wireless Cellular Communication Site Special Use Permit as presented and to authorize the chair to sign applicable documents. The motion passed by voice vote.
