Resident urges Uvalde County to prioritize veterans services as budget shows large requests

A local resident, Dionor Vidal Karoo, used the public-comment period to press the Uvalde County Commissioners Court to re-examine upcoming budget requests and to prioritize veteran services.
"One of the main things that the county is responsible for is providing service to your constituents, to the residents of Uvalde County," Karoo told the court, citing a roughly $1,000,000 level of requested spending in the proposed budget and asking which requests are necessary. Karoo specifically urged the court to consider creating a part-time position for the veterans office and asked whether commissioner salary reductions or stipends could free funds instead of increasing taxes.
Karoo said the auditor’s prior presentation made it sound like several personnel requests — including a veterans office position, raises for the county clerk, and a full-time elections employee — had already been decided against, and asked the commission to clarify how it intends to close the gap. The comment period ended when the presiding judge reminded the speaker that time had expired.
The court did not take immediate action on the citizen’s proposals during the meeting; budget items were on the docket for later consideration. The comment was recorded for the commissioners’ consideration as they finalize the FY 2027 budget.
