The Board of Pardons and Paroles voted to deny the pardon application of Lonnie Mebane after an extended victim statement by Nicole Gardner Wilson. Wilson described a pattern of escalating domestic abuse over years, including choking, threats with a knife, and ongoing emotional and financial harm to her and her son. She asked the board to ‘‘carefully consider’’ the lasting impact of his conduct.
Board members said the victim’s testimony was powerful and that the ongoing trauma to the family weighed heavily in their deliberations. ‘‘He has not changed. He has not earned forgiveness, and he does not deserve a pardon,’’ Wilson told the panel. After deliberation the panel moved to deny the pardon; the motion carried by majority vote. The board recorded the denial and instructed staff to issue standard notifications and to note victim concerns in the decision letter.
