Public commenter urges city to require upfront water and power disclosures for data centers

During the meeting's public-comment period, Ron Swinford of Poplar Street urged the city to join county efforts on data-center planning and require prospective data-center operators to disclose anticipated water and power usage in advance of approvals.
Swinford cited Loudoun County, Virginia, as an example, saying it used about 1 gigawatt a day in 2018 and "in 2024... that's up to 4.14 gigawatts a day" and projecting further growth. He recommended upfront disclosure of water and power needs, consideration of storm-water capture and reuse for cooling, and third-party testing of cooling-system emissions and blowdown discharges to protect local water-treatment operations.
The mayor thanked Swinford for his input. Commissioners directed staff to consider comments and coordinate with county partners and development-authority efforts.
