The Charles Town Tree Board reported progress on its tree canopy inventory after members obtained shared credentials for a cloud-based GIS and uploaded legacy inventory files into a team space. Chair said the upload allows the board to visualize tree data but that members need basic training to use the system effectively.
"We have a set of credentials to log in to the cloud-based software," Scott said, adding that the account has the privileges the board needs and that he uploaded the old inventory into a separate space so the board can make changes. He urged the group to identify a short list of required tasks — creating a map, loading data, and making updates — as a definition of "bare minimum" functionality before expanding use.
Members discussed contacting the county GIS coordinator, Jessica Gormont, as a potential free resource to show the board how to use core features; Scott proposed preparing a concise list of questions to make that consultation productive. The board agreed to schedule a follow-up work session to develop those questions and to pair more technically comfortable members with others for hands-on training.
The inventory is intended to guide planting priorities, maintenance schedules and locations for future volunteer efforts. The board asked Scott and another volunteer (Trevor) to continue exploring the software and report back with a recommended next step list.
