Buffalo County emergency director urges Kearney residents to use statewide tornado drill to practice plans

Darren Lewis, Buffalo County Emergency Management director, told the Kearney City Council that the statewide tornado drill scheduled for roughly 10 a.m. will sound sirens in every community in Buffalo County, including the City of Kearney, and asked residents to “practice their plan as it was a real event for them.”
Lewis, speaking during Severe Weather Awareness Week, said the drill is a chance for residents to confirm where they will shelter and how they will receive warnings. He noted that sirens are designed for outdoor notification and that indoor alerting should include NOAA weather radios and cellphone-based alerts. “Do not rely on sirens to wake you up at 03:00 in the morning because they won't, and they're not designed to,” Lewis said, adding that people should know their safe places before severe weather arrives.
