Council approves conditional-use permit for Verizon-linked tower near high school

The Kearney City Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 87-96, granting a conditional-use permit to allow a telecommunication monopole roughly 85 feet tall (90 feet including a lightning rod) on a parcel in the extraterritorial area south of West 11th Street near Kearney High School. Woody Krogh, the site development agent with Buell Consulting representing The Towers LLC, explained the location, setback distances and engineering certification that limits the tower’s fall zone to the leased area. “The proposed 85 foot monopole tower plus 5 foot lightning rod exceeds city ordinance setback requirements,” Krogh said during his presentation.
Council clarified three conditions before approving the permit: the height limitation/measurement, maintenance of screening for the life of the tower, and a requirement to submit changes of ownership within 30 days. A motion to close the public hearing and place Ordinance No. 87-96 on final passage passed on roll call; council later moved the ordinance to passage and publication as provided by law.
