Council approves 12‑week unpaid education leave for library employee

During the work session Mary Lund, a member (past chair) of the library board, asked the council to approve an education leave so a long‑time library employee can complete her practicum for a master's degree while retaining benefits and continuing to work part‑time.
“We'd like to have her leave of absence for 6 weeks…12 weeks. Keep her benefits,” Mary Lund said, explaining the staff member would continue working roughly 20 hours per week and would remain eligible for benefits prorated to the reduced hours. The board asked the council to approve the leave as a leave without pay so the employee could maintain benefits during the academic practicum.
Councilor [mover] made a motion to approve the leave without pay as presented; the motion was seconded and approved in a roll‑call vote. The clerk recorded affirmatives from council members and stated, “Motion carries.” The council did not specify additional conditions; staff said the item will appear on the formal agenda for a subsequent meeting with the implementing paperwork.
