Mason Commission certifies May 2 election results; mayor and two commissioners sworn in

Commissioner David Hyden moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Annette Thomas seconded. The vote was recorded with Commissioners Hyden and Thomas in favor and Mayor Pro Tem William Beaty abstaining; the motion carried 2-0-1.
After the canvass, Allen "administered the Statement of Officer, Oath of Office and presented the Certificates for Election" to William E. Beaty Jr. as Mayor At Large, Bonnie Beam Riggs as Commissioner District 1 and John Gammill as Commissioner District 3. The newly sworn members were seated and began their duties immediately.
Why it matters: Canvassing formally certifies election results and enables newly elected officials to assume office and carry out municipal responsibilities.
