Superintendent urges restructuring committee after $5.7 million cut; school-closure options on table

Superintendent Dave told the board the district had reduced its budget by $5,700,000 and now faces uneven class sizes that create staffing inefficiencies. "We we cut $5,700,000 from the budget," he said, adding that elementary class sizes have been raised to 24.5 and four of six elementary schools now have very small cohorts at many grade levels.
Dave said the district has two choices when a grade reaches larger sizes: leave one teacher and let class size rise into the 30s, or add a teacher and split the grade into much smaller classes. He described the committee's charge as analyzing the math, weighing options including school consolidation, and presenting options and trade-offs so the board can later take action. He proposed three initial committee sessions on Sept. 3, Sept. 17 and Oct. 1 and said boundaries alone do not solve the problem.
