Council OKs Main Street interim expansion contract to build a right-turn lane

Council voted to award the interim Main Street expansion contract (IFB 302) to the low bidder to add a right-turn lane and provide early traffic relief ahead of a full expansion. Staff said the interim solution is designed to avoid major infrastructure changes while delivering near-term congestion relief; the low bid presented was about $585,129.50 and staff requested a 10% construction contingency.
Staff noted a shortfall of roughly $263,000 to fully fund the interim scope and recommended using mobility-program funds to cover the gap. A council member who represents the west side said the interim project will be "a huge win" for residents who face daily traffic delays.
"This interim solution provides for that right turn lane right here prior to where the car wash is," staff said, explaining how the configuration will create earlier queuing capacity and reduce peak congestion. The council approved the award and contingency authorization and instructed staff to coordinate with nearby development projects as construction begins.
