Traffic monitors record more than 7,000 vehicles during Bearhill Road detour

First Selectman Paul Zolpa presented results from two speed-tracking devices installed on Bearhill Road during the Heskey Bridge detour. Between March 30 and April 12, the sign at 38 Bearhill Road recorded 7,045 vehicles, with approximately 15% traveling above 31 miles per hour and six vehicles recorded at speeds over 40 mph. On the route toward Route 317 the sign at 72 Bearhill Road recorded 5,706 vehicles in the same period, with about 4.34% over 31 mph and a single vehicle exceeding 35 mph.
Zolpa said the town will continue to monitor traffic patterns and vehicle speeds while the detour remains and will consider additional steps if needed once the bridge reopens. "Between March 30 and April 12, a total of 7,045 vehicles passed the sign located at 38 Bearhill Road," Zolpa reported, providing the board with the baseline data that will guide any further traffic safety decisions.
