Council members pushed staff for clarity about sidewalk priorities on Mercury Boulevard and whether planned improvements would provide continuous pedestrian access.
Public works staff said construction contracts are being executed for sidewalks between Colosseum Drive and Armstead and that the Mercury corridor work will include dedicated sidewalks and design features to manage multiple access points. When a council member asked whether sidewalks would be on both sides of Mercury, staff replied: "Yes." Staff also said the Commerce Drive extension will be limited to right‑in/right‑out access to reduce conflict points and that designers are mindful of curb cuts and adjacent business access.
Council members emphasized pedestrian safety and pointed to gaps that create curb cuts to nowhere; staff said the Mercury work has been reviewed as part of National Highway System and VDOT funding criteria.
