Smith recalled the 2009 flood that gutted the lower office and noted FEMA has allowed the structure to remain but not for human habitation. He said the lower level floods even in small events and that constructing vehicle bays at the lower level would leave them flood-prone.
Smith presented options including demolishing the unused lower office, repurposing existing storage bays, or converting other storage into taller workshop space. Commissioners agreed to an in-person site inspection to review the wash pad, fuel system and identify locations suitable for new bays; the tour is scheduled for May 18 at 3:00 p.m.
