County approves Knox Box program to speed fire response; $67,280 in CIP funding

Staff presented the countywide Knox Box program to expand an existing Farmville system to all Prince Edward County fire departments. The project, ranked in the adopted CIP, is intended to give fire and EMS crews secure key access to buildings to reduce forced entry and speed response.
Trey Pyle said the full program was budgeted and staff had received a final quote for equipment. "The total cost of the project is $67,280," he said, and noted the funding is in the CIP line item for 2026. Staff explained how the system logs key use and deactivates keys when not returned.
A motion to purchase and implement the Knox Box program was moved and seconded; the board approved the purchase in a roll-call vote. Staff said this would unify the system countywide and allow quicker access when responding to alarms while minimizing damage from forced entry.
