At the Jan. 27 workshop, Susan Kiel said she had contacted Carmine, Fayetteville and Industry to ask how those towns enforce building codes and reported that each enforces codes in-house and uses newer code editions than Burton. "Burton does have a building code ordinance that requires the use of the 2015 International Residential Building Code," Kiel said, noting Burton's ordinance references the 2015 edition.
Kiel's remarks prompted discussion about whether Burton should update its ordinance to match neighboring towns. Council members and residents said an updated code could affect enforcement and construction standards, and speakers urged the city to weigh the administrative burden of adopting newer editions against potential safety and construction-quality benefits.
