Residents question AOKA involvement, citing costs and potential conflict of interest

Several residents told the council they were wary of hiring the consulting firm AOKA without first completing a citywide review of ordinances. "Before a firm such as AOKA is considered that all ordinances in the city need to be reviewed and updated to get a better picture of what the city will require in terms of code enforcement," resident Kathy Liles said during public comment.
Barbee Gonzales asked for clarification on how many ordinances Burton has and whether AOKA's participation in updates could present a conflict of interest. Council members acknowledged the concerns and discussed narrowing the scope of any agreement so that AOKA's role would be defined by the city and limited to specific tasks such as ordinance review, enforcement assistance, or staff training.
