Council reviewed an ordinance proposing specific exemptions to vendor permitting fees established under the city’s Occupational Licenses and Business Regulations Ordinance of 2001. City Secretary Angela Harrington summarized her research showing the vendor fee historically covered security at the Burton Cotton Gin Festivals and noted few groups had paid the fee in recent years.
Councilmember Jeff Eckhardt argued that, if fees are to be waived for some local non‑profits, the ordinance should be revised to extend exemptions to all non‑profit organizations operating inside the city. Council voted to table the ordinance so staff can revise the language.
