Board details new gated driveway, urges parents to use front arrival procedures

The Ossining Board of Education heard a detailed update on a newly completed gated driveway and traffic plan designed to separate bus, staff and emergency access from neighborhood traffic. Superintendent Mary Foxhalter said the driveway "is not intended for residential traffic or as a neighborhood access road," and stressed that it will open only during AM arrival and PM dismissal windows to manage flow and safety.
Foxhalter and staff said the measure is part of a larger traffic-management plan intended to reduce congestion around the school campus. A staff member explained that the driveway is gated, has expanded parking ("over 100 parking spaces" in a new rear lot), and that students will continue to enter through the front door and cross at a staffed crosswalk. The superintendent previewed a short video and a postcard to be delivered to immediate neighbors and said items will also appear in the district newsletter.
Board members emphasized student safety and implementation steps. The district will issue distinct parking passes for middle- and Claremont/AMD staff, deploy extra staff in both parking lots at openings, and monitor the procedures closely at the start of the school year. Parents were asked specifically to "not drop off your students along the new driveway" to avoid congestion and unsafe crossings.
The superintendent said construction and traffic changes will be monitored and adjusted if needed; she encouraged families to consult the district facilities web page for ongoing updates and to scan the QR code provided by the district for more information.
The board did not take a separate vote on the driveway itself during the meeting; the update was presented to inform the community and explain operational procedures for the upcoming school year.
