Mayor highlights KDOT safety award; police chief stresses school-bus enforcement

Mayor Ronnie Price introduced representatives from the Kansas Department of Transportation and recognized local officers for work on traffic-safety programs that contributed to the city’s receipt of a KDOT platinum award. The mayor said Andover has received the platinum award more than any jurisdiction in Kansas and thanked officers who work behind the scenes on enforcement programs.
Police Chief Buck Buchanan described the department's traffic and safety efforts, including seat-belt programs, DUI enforcement and speed enforcement. "It's not about getting the tickets. It's about keeping kids' lives safe," Buchanan told the council while urging drivers to stop for school buses and follow the department’s outreach materials. He said officers will be enforcing school-bus stop signs and that citations are meant to protect students.
Councilmembers noted the department’s community engagement and reminded residents to be mindful of school zones and bus stops as the school year begins. Chief Buchanan said the department publishes monthly reports on enforcement activity and that residents should consult the police Facebook page for a short explanatory video and enforcement chart.
