Myra Ford, an Andover resident representing the American Red Cross, presented a traveling trophy to the Andover Fire Department after the July 16 “Battle of the Badges” blood drive.
Ford told the council that the Andover Police Department and Andover Fire Department together collected 79 blood donations—"having the potential to help save up to 237 lives." She said both departments exceeded their individual collection goals: the police department collected 44 units against a goal of 30 (147% of goal) and the fire department collected 35 units against a 30-unit goal (about 117% of goal).
Ford thanked volunteers, donors and the city for support and encouraged continued community participation. Councilmembers congratulated both departments and noted the popular-vote trophy went to the fire department while police collected the most pints, a point several councilmembers raised in the discussion.
The presentation also included recognition that scheduling conflicts and other events can affect turnout; staff and councilmembers said the community’s continued support was important to sustaining the Red Cross’s life-saving mission.
