Staff and municipal utilities committee members said the city currently spends about $50,000 a year on vacuum-truck services and that the trailer would replace roughly 30 to 40 percent of that cost. One presenter said the purchase "would pay for itself in 4 years." The funds will come from remaining public-works/bond funds, and staff said the unit is not intended to replace larger vacuum trucks used for deeper manholes.
Council voted in favor of the purchase after questions about procurement method and lead time; staff said the vendor could likely deliver in time for summer use.
