City partners with Texas A&M students to map wastewater and update parts of Comprehensive Plan

Utility Manager Rachel Belvin and Mayor Karen Buck said students have visited Burton multiple times to map sewer and wastewater infrastructure and will work in spring 2026 on Comprehensive Plan components such as population, housing, land use, utilities, streets and storm drainage.
The mayor noted the project scope includes mapping previously unknown wastewater lines and manholes, and that students are required to have biweekly contact with the city as part of the program. The minutes say one next group of students in spring 2026 will work on updating components of the 2000 City of Burton Comprehensive Plan; topics listed in meeting materials include historic preservation, mixed‑use development, streetscapes, infrastructure and sustainability themes.
