Daviess County eyes $2.5M from US 50 relinquishment to fund Colbert Ditch bridge and roundabout grants

The Daviess County Highway Department is preparing to direct proceeds from the anticipated US 50 relinquishment toward local infrastructure, Highway Supervisor Chris Winkler told county commissioners on July 28.
Winkler said the county expects "about $2.5 million" from the relinquishment and that "some of this money will be used for the bridge over Colbert Ditch and using some of this money to pay the matching portion of the updates and towards grants for the roundabout." He also reported that the county received reimbursements after the April–May gas-tax suspension: "Daviess County got reimbursed $204,527.13 out of Motor Vehicle Highway Fund (MVH) and $26,883.90 for Local Roads and Streets (LR&S)."
Commissioners did not take a separate vote on the US 50 relinquishment at the meeting; Winkler said the funds are expected to support the bridge project and grant matches. He recommended that the highway department continue to manage available MVH and cumulative bridge funds conservatively; the department is keeping roughly $1 million in those accounts in certificates of deposit to accrue interest and preserve spending flexibility.
The discussion will continue as project designs and grant applications are finalized and as the county coordinates FEMIS requests and INDOT timelines for federally funded components.
