The Kearney Planning Commission on July 17 approved a petition to vacate the remaining portion of 32nd Street (Vacation No. 2026-03), a short segment abutting Lots in Block 7 of Perkins and Harford's Addition.
Craig Bennett, representing the abutting owners, told commissioners the families signed a voluntary vacation petition and intend to divide the right-of-way among themselves if the street is vacated. "Abageland has family has wanted to build a building located here for a garage," Bennett said, explaining the immediate impetus for the request. City staff said the portion contains no public infrastructure and that the western segment of the street had been vacated previously; staff recommended approval as consistent with the 2016 comprehensive plan.
Commissioners moved and approved the vacation by roll call. The applicant and staff said abutting owners will receive half of the vacated right-of-way per statute and will determine exact boundaries among themselves after the vacation is recorded. The commission recorded the action as Vacation 2026-03.
