Council on Aging flags Senior Center water leaks, masonry work stalled until state certification

Todd Goodwin, chair of the Fitchburg Council on Aging, opened routine business and then heard building and maintenance updates from Executive Director Amanda Koeck.
Koeck said Silvio’s Masonry and Landscaping of Fitchburg is ready to begin a masonry project but “the project can’t begin until the spending of free cash is certified by State approval.” She also cited an email from the Water Department noting “thousands of gallons of water leaving the Senior Center,” attributing that to corroding basement pipes and spikes in usage that matched days the building served as a warming center. Royal Steam visited the center on Feb. 12 to replace the furnace’s pressure-relief valve.
Board members pressed for clarity on responsibility for repairs. Jim Craigen questioned why Koeck was coordinating the response rather than Building Maintenance or the Mayor’s office; Andrew Van Hazinga noted that the newly hired Facilities Director, Bill Hawkins, will start next week. The record does not show a formal vote or directive beyond continued monitoring and scheduled vendor work.
The board also noted roof work: Koeck said Rockwell Roofing addressed ice dams and ceiling leaks in several upstairs rooms but that some leaking continues. The discussion highlighted immediate repair needs and a pending masonry project that is constrained by the city’s free-cash certification process.
