The Tigard Police Department presented a life‑saving medal to Officer Benjamin Byerley for emergency CPR administered on Jan. 11, 2026, a recognition Chief Bob Rogers described as “a significant one for us.”
Chief Rogers said the department’s community oriented policing team has handled a high volume of nuisance and outreach calls this summer and that officers have focused on contacts with people experiencing homelessness to provide services and ensure safety. Rogers provided a snapshot of calls and contacts and noted the department made one arrest related to those activities while issuing multiple warnings to gain compliance.
Assistant Chief Brad Sitton and Community Engagement Coordinator Maddie Bauer briefed the council on summer safety efforts and the department’s new e‑bike initiative. Bauer said the police launched a plain‑language web page and safety flyer explaining Oregon law on e‑bikes and e‑scooters and an online reporting tool to help the department identify dangerous riding trends and target outreach and enforcement. “Today, we launched an online reporting tool that will allow community members to report dangerous e‑bike and e‑scooter behavior,” Bauer said.
Councilors asked how to access the reporting tool; staff gave the URL (tigard‑or.gov/tpd-ebike) and said the tool will help the department focus education and enforcement in problem areas. The department also described planned DUI enforcement around Labor Day and school‑zone enforcement tied to the start of the school year.
