County consultants say proposed highway facility will fit planned sites; sale of county property could offset costs

Brandon Hytinen, Highway Commissioner, and Kurt Berner of Samuels Group told the Highway Committee that Excel’s site layout fits the parcels being considered near STH‑22 and US‑141 and that a recent wetland delineation "determined the water way that is currently on one of the properties is not navigable." Berner asked Excel to convert the block diagram to a floor plan so he can develop cost estimates for the main and auxiliary buildings and provide preliminary budget numbers by the end of July.
County Administrator Richard Heath said three county‑owned properties not currently in use have a combined estimated value of $3.1 million and could be sold to help fund the facility. Berner said soil borings would be conducted before acquisition, and he is scheduled to present the most recent information to the County Board on July 23. The committee discussed including an additional 5‑acre parcel north of Olson Road to allow relocation and expansion of other county departments; adding that parcel would require an alternate bid from Excel and additional budget consideration.
The presentation focused on siting, layout and next steps rather than final approvals. No property sale or acquisition vote was taken at the July 9 meeting; the committee understood further cost estimates and financing recommendations (Huntington Securities) are necessary before formal acquisition steps.
