The West Haven City Council voted to adopt Ordinance 32-2024, a set of amendments to the city’s 2024–2025 budget, but agreed to hold line item 10-5161 for further review.
Mayor Vanderwood told the council he would prefer that credit-card convenience fees be addressed by a new policy—such as requiring payors to cover the fees or pay by check—rather than by amending the budget. "I would prefer the credit card fees be addressed with a new policy such as requiring them to pay the fees or pay by check instead of amending the budget," the mayor said. Councilmember Nina Morse said she agreed with charging a convenience fee.
Councilmember Kim Dixon moved to adopt Ordinance 32-2024 with the exception of line item 10-5161 so the council could review that item later; Nina Morse seconded. The motion passed with Councilmembers Call, Saunders, Morse, Dixon and Swapp voting yes. The ordinance amendment will be recorded as Ordinance 32-2024 in city records.
The action follows a public hearing on the proposed budget amendments at which Shawn Warnke reviewed the changes and no members of the public spoke. The council’s decision leaves open a policy path for handling credit-card fees and schedules separate review of the specific line item the council set aside.
